The Modern Motherhood Collection

I am thrilled to share that the first sixteen pieces of my “Modern Motherhood” series are now available as fine art prints! About a year ago, while dancing in the kitchen with my daughter while making her breakfast, I came up with the idea to paint little scenes of modern motherhood- not necessarily the biggest moments, or the most noteworthy, but the little every day moments that define, for me, what it means to be a mother. I jotted down several ideas- peek-a-boo with the shower curtain, sink baths, applying makeup one-handed- and then promptly forgot about the idea until several months later.

Last fall, I tried to bring the idea to life with oil paint, and while it was a fun experiment for me, I ended up moving on to working on something else (the “Tapestry” series), and once again forgetting about the little motherhood scenes. Finally, while reading about the history of Delft tiles this past spring, something clicked. What was originally meant to be a single piece quickly turned into sixteen tiny individual pieces, included in the “Tapestry” collection.

I have since continued to make more “Modern Motherhood” pieces, inspired by experiencing new things with my daughter, who will turn two very soon. I am so looking forward to continuing to work on this series as my daughter grows- I keep catching myself smiling while painting them, which has always seemed to me as good a sign as any to keep going with an idea.

While this is the most personal series I’ve ever worked on, my hope is that other mothers and caretakers of other kinds (I know that the first time I experienced some of these- like tying shoes and applying sunscreen- were actually with campers and students, and I see my daughter’s teachers and grandparents in so many of them as well) are able to see themselves and their own children in them.

Each fine art print is printed in archival inks on 100% cotton rag paper. Each printed image is 4.5”x4.5” with a .25” border and a hand-torn deckled edge (5”x5” total), to ensure that each print is as close to the original piece as possible. I’ve signed and dated each print. I have never been more excited about a print offering, and hope that you all love these as much as I do.
